Oxblood smoothie (Vegan)

DSC_1140

No animals were harmed in the creation of this idiotically vibrant pink smoothie that suffuses your insides with a similar blazing glow of health and wellness, not least because this delicious lambent drink is made in mere moments and serves as a fantastic post-workout snack or a cool supplement with any meal.

The ingredients can be easily substituted with what you have on hand and what kind of flavour profile you need in a particular smoothie. I gravitate towards resplendent reds and thusly red pitaya for the colour and nutrition boost along with bananas, strawberries, cashew nuts and soy milk.

DSC_1119

There’s just the one step to it that is blending all the ingredients.

strawberries in with pitaya or dragonfruit as we call it and I have frozen strawberries here.

banana and soy milk,

a couple of pulses followed by a long whizz and there we have it. Luminous and bloody red.

(I have on previous occasions used boiled beetroot instead of pitaya with similar results.)

Super smoothie (Vegan)

If you’re looking for a quick, healthy, delicious post-workout recovery snack/drink or even just a nutritious little something to go with your daily blah then look no further because have I got a smoothie for you.

It’s gratifyingly enjoyable in a way that post-workout drinks should be, easy to put together with simple ingredients that can be mixed up to suit your tastes.

If you’re used to keeping a stocked larder with superfoods or just interested in knowing the different ways to use up those seeds and berries you can’t seem to finish then this might just be what you’re looking for and it’s pink.

DSC_0820 copy

A great smoothie needs a banana and it’s one of those definite fruits that does wonders for your body and system. It’s easily accessible, cheap and sweet. Apart from some strawberries (you could use any easily blendable fruit or berry of choice), goji berries to oomph the superbness of this smoothie what with all the antioxidants and vitamins and minerals, chia seeds for the overall goodness of the omega 3, protein, antioxidants and fibre and some milk.

It’s pretty straightforward really. You bung everything in a blender and blend, but I will demonstrate still.

Hot chocolate mix

dsc_0857

When this world feels like a rotting dump of methane filled sewage, there are few comforts you turn to. A loving voice, a soothing touch, a reassuring moan.. and all these things are impossibly hard to come by; why else would this world have turned into a venomous pit of hate infected flies?  You need something restorative, with the potential to remedy some aches and provide warm succour.

You need a cup of hot chocolate and not just any ol’ hot chocolate but a homemade version. One that’s a pre mix, which needs nothing save pouring in hot water or milk if you think you need it. But it’s a mix, which means there’s milk present already, so really just hot water is all you need.

There’s a sort of whimsical poetry, like a fluttering tune about ‘hot chocolate’. The fact that it’s chocolate in pourable form that can be drunk warm. Wisps of chocolatey fog hitting your face and thick sweetness with all the richness of terra cotta cocoa pouring into your system provides instant calmness and an upbeat feeling of general wellness.

dsc_0832-copy

Unlike store brought hot chocolate mixes that are doused to the teeth with chemicals that you couldn’t pronounce, this is one is fairly docile. Just sugar, vanilla pods, milk powder, cocoa powder, corn starch and salt.

dsc_0833

Split the belly of vanilla pods to extract all the wonderful flavour of the seeds. Sometimes it’s also called vanilla caviar. hmm.

dsc_0836

add it to the sugar. Don’t throw away these emptied out vanilla pods. Stick them in a jar of sugar to make vanilla sugar. ah, the wonderful fragrance.

also- if you do not have vanilla pods or you’d rather not bother with vanilla in this recipe, simply omit this step.

dsc_0841

add in the corn starch to this mix

dsc_0842

whisk it about. Though it’s not needed because the next step will take care of the mixing.

dsc_0843

whizz it in a blender or a processor, whatever you have on hand to make this coarse sugar vanilla corn starch mixture into a powdery mix.

dsc_0844

something like this. See how it’s flecked with vanilla beans.

dsc_0848

add milk powder to the now powdered sugar+vanilla+corn starch

dsc_0850

in with the cocoa powder.

dsc_0851

and sea salt

dsc_0852

use a whisk to mix it well. Get rid of any lumps. And it’s done.

dsc_0855

there you have it. Your very own homemade hot chocolate mix. Store it in a jar and have fun with it.

dsc_0861

this is how you make it. Scoop out 3 heaped spoonfuls into a mug.

dsc_0862

add hot not boiling water.

dsc_0867

there you have it. Hot chocolate in the comforts of your own home. Made in lesser time than it would take for you to go out and have some. This mix is not only easy but so convenient. Anytime you need a fix just scoop out and pour.

Mango honey lemonade

DSC_0027

OK, you could keep staring at it all you want, or you could just march into your kitchen and make yourself a serving of this molten sunshine. Even though it looks like a pool of liquid gold, it tastes of aqueous angels, and they do sing a bit of harp filled melody each time you sip into this divine potion of dulcet daylight.

Well, it’s the summers and you need something that looks like sun and tastes like ice, only this is delightfully citrusy, lyrically sweet and fused with the plump golden pulp of voluptuous heat soaked mangoes…and it takes five minutes to conjure up this baby.

DSC_0001 copy

all you really need is love..a couple of fat mangoes, honey, lemon and water. nothing too tedious

DSC_0002

you gotta commit act of loving violence however and disrobe your mangoes ever so tactfully, or not..really it’s up to you how you want to gouge out the flesh.

DSC_0003

then put into a blender of choice

DSC_0004

along with honey, and blend

DSC_0005

to get a pulp of midas proportions

DSC_0007

this is totally optional, but it adds an extra note of citrus. Carefully remove only the yellow part of the lemon. You can zest it if you want, or you can take a sharp knife and slowly peel just the outer yellow skin.

DSC_0008

like so.. and squeeze the lemon into a separate glass. There isn’t a picture for it..sorry folks

DSC_0009

plonk in the lemon rind, and it will slowly keep infusing.

DSC_0010

Now for the grand assembly. This is the complicated part where you can make mistakes, because magically a glass bearing the juice of squeezed lemon has appeared.

DSC_0011

now..lemon juice into the water

DSC_0012

followed by mango pulp into the water

DSC_0013

et voila, a lava lamp!

DSC_0015

mix well, twirl it around with all your might, form a whirlpool if you must.

DSC_0018

stare at it, stagger over speechless and renounce the world.

DSC_0019

pour over crushed ice

DSC_0021

and drink!
